MSU Retirees Association Meeting, Monday, February 8, 2010, from 2:00-3:00 pm (refreshments at 1:30 pm). Location: Community Room, MSU Federal Credit Union, 600 E. Crescent Road, just off Harrison Road in East Lansing. Speaker: Dr. John Shinsky, Associate Professor of Educational Leadership and Chairperson, Leadership and Human Services Department, Grand Valley State University. Topic: The City Of Children of Matamoros A.C. and College Football Teammates on the Bike Ride of Their Lives to Raise Money for the Orphanage. John Shinsky, a former orphan and foster child, went to college on an athletic scholarship and became an Academic All-American football player as a defensive tackle at Michigan State University (MSU) from 1970-1973. John received bachelors, masters, and Ph.D. degrees from Michigan State. After college, John built an inspiring 35-year career as a teacher of English in high school, special education teacher and administrator, and now serves at Grand Valley State University as an Associate Professor of Educational Leadership and the Department Chairperson of the Leadership and Human Services Department. The orphanage which he co-founded was formally incorporated as a non-profit organization in the United States and Mexico in 2004. The vision for this project came from John Shinsky and his dream to build an orphanage which would provide abandoned children with adequate food, shelter, safety, love, support, and training for future independence. When John was training in Brownsville Texas, he became aware of the terrible living conditions for children across the Texas border in Matamoros Mexico. It is very difficult to explain the terrible conditions children face in the streets of Matamoros Mexico. Thousands of children and families in Matamoros live on $1.00 per day for food. It became evident that a large number of children lived in cardboard houses and had only the garbage dump as their neighborhood. As a result, there is terrible poverty, disease, lack of education, and abandonment of children. After meeting with community leaders, various missionary workers, and the Rotarians, John committed his efforts to building a home for abandoned children that would allow these children to escape terrible poverty, disease, and abandonment, to replace it with love, care, support, education, career training, and future independence. John's dream became a reality when he received a donation of 17 acres of land in Matamoros, Mexico in 2003, from a successful businessman Mr. Ramiro Gonzalez Garza. Attendance: MSU retirees, spouses, and friends of MSU. Inquiries: MSU Retirees Association, (517) 353-7896 or email: msura@msu.edu ________ B.
