The program is called the "Longitudinal Patient-Centered Experience," or "LPCE." Patients with a variety of chronic conditions are matched with two first-year medical students. Examples include, but are not limited to: arthritis, asthma, cancer, cerebral palsy, depression, emphysema, epilepsy, heart disease, HIV infection, kidney disease, multiple sclerosis, organ transplants, Parkinson's disease, sickle cell anemia, or strokes. Children are also encouraged to participate as long as they are able to talk to the students and parents are willing to assist.
