Subject: MSU Retirees -- e-Notices, 10/16/14 Michigan State University Retirees Association (MSURA) MSURA NEWSLETTER MSURA's November/December 2014 "Spartan Senior" newsletter is available online. A front page article explains how to access electronic resources and databases available through the MSU Library and the Library of Michigan: http://retirees.msu.edu/Newsletters.html Additional details regarding access to electronic resources (by Steven Sowards, 9/2/14): The restrictions on off-campus access to full-text online materials are a function of licenses in the sales and subscription model used by publishers (as copyright holders, or on behalf of the copyright holders). For retirees, we can provide the following options at the MSU Libraries: Community borrower privileges: See http://www.lib.msu.edu/about/policy-lendingall/ for the text of our "Lending Policies and Borrower Responsibilities" ... scroll down to "Library Cards for Michigan Residents" for eligibility to borrow print-format books, CDs, DVDs etc, and a bit farther down to see the loan periods. We welcome visitors to the library ... parking can be a challenge, but we do have a CyberCafé for coffee. Hours: http://www.lib.msu.edu/hours/ "Walk-in" access to online resources: With very limited exceptions, we have negotiated licenses that allow anyone physically in the library to access and use our online materials. There are half a dozen "Selected Resource PCs" near the Main Library Reference Desk, located halfway between the two entrances. It should be possible to read text, view streaming video and hear streaming music at these PCs (the Copy Center on 2-West sells earbuds, and the Kline Digital & Multimedia Center on 4-West has headphones to lend). Reference Desk staff are nearby during much of the week, and they can assist. Alternative remote access resources: The Library of Michigan (the state government library in downtown Lansing) offers the Michigan eLibrary (MeL), a collection of online databases for citizens of Michigan. This is paid for with state and federal funds. You can find a list of the "MeL Databases" at http://www.mel.org/Databases While not as extensive as the MSU resources, MeL is worth becoming familiar with. Login access is based on a Michigan driver's license or state ID card.
