Greater Lansing Food Bank (GLFB) is a non-profit organization that provides emergency food to people in need in Clare, Clinton, Eaton, Gratiot, Ingham, Isabella and Shiawassee counties. Website

The Michigan History Center 702 W. Kalamazoo St., Lansing, MI, 48915 is looking for history-lovers to assist with special events, archives and collections projects, guided tours, programs for students, and more! The Davies Project for Mid-Michigan Children.  The Davies Project (TDP), is a Lansing based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides transportation support (rides) to medical appointments for children (accompanied by a parent) with long-term or serious health challenges in the Lansing area, ride assistance for expectant moms to their prenatal appointments and new parents to the hospital NICU to bond with their newborns.  New volunteer training is provided and a background check performed.  Contact our volunteer recruiter by email at maryjo@thedaviesproject.org, or by phone at (517) 582-3145, or by checking out our web site at:  www.thedaviesproject.org.

R. J. Scheffel Memorial Toy Project uses retirees from a wide range of backgrounds, to make handcrafted wooden toys and games for children of Clinton, Eaton and Ingham Counties who are disadvantaged or in crisis. Helping Hands, located behind People’s Church on Grand River, provides temporary relief for caregivers and families who are caring for those with disabilities, chronic illnesses, and the elderly.  The mission of Helping Hands Respite Center is to enhance the quality of life for family members and caregivers of individuals affected by life altering conditions and to give a little relief to those providing 24/7 care of a loved one.  HelpingHandsRespite.Care

Volunteer for the MSU Gardens

Old Newsboys Association

In 1924, Lansing truant officer George Palmer discovered that many children were not attending school because they lacked proper footwear.  With the help of the community, he created what has become known as the Old Newsboys Association.  In cooperation with the Lansing State Journal, a single day “fun” publication, spoofing the year’s events, is sold in December. 

All proceeds from the sale are used to purchase footwear for needy children living within a 25-mile radius of the City of Lansing with no funds from the sale being diverted for administrative costs.   Your Retirees Association decided in 2006 to help this organization either through providing volunteers on the day of the sale to “hawk” the “spoof” edition of the Lansing State Journal or through contributions by its members.  If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Brenda Spackman at 651-9101 or the Retirees’ Office at 353-7896.  Learn more, at the web site Lansingoldnewsboys.org.
